So i've now seen this same "skill testing mathematical question" on three different contest entry forms.  Each time, the person administering the contest told me what the "correct" answer was before I got to the point where I would write it in.

Although I rarely take my time filling in these forms, and would usually welcome something that saved me time, in each case, the person gave me the same, wrong answer. At least, wrong according to how my school taught math.

What's your answer?  Leave out the reasons why for now, just post up your answer.  Give it a week and then we can debate which one is correct.  Fill in the blank:

(5 x 6) - 10 / 4 = __

27.5, of course .... I want to see the math books that say this should be otherwise!

I would have said the answer was 5, but maybe that's because I'm a blonde. :-)

5 would be the common/ignorant answer.  The "skill testing question" shows up at trade shows sometimes, and it is the same joy trying to remind sales reps of the "Brackets, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction" rules.  It's a science trade show, for pete's sake; do they not realize that everyone coming through the door had to take math?  And have some basic understanding of it?   5 is wrong and give me the stupid tshirt already...

If I were filling in the answer, I'd write down 5.  It's not mathematically correct but it's the answer that will win me the prize.  And it's all about the prize, right?
