pretty scary (none / 0) (#1)

That article is pretty spooky but on the flip side it could also get better.  Take me as an example.  I am mildly allergic to some foods and I am quite allergic to mosquito bites.  But something's changing...  I have noticed that my allergy to mosquito bites is greatly reduced.  I got bitten twice last week and they were barely annoying.  I didn't even zap them with my therapik.  Usually, they would puff up and I would need ice.  As for my food allergies, I had tomato based pasta sauce 3 meals in a row last week (thanks for not helping me with the leftovers, Markus).  Usually, that would send me over the edge considering I ate rice that week.  But nothing...  Granted, my allergies are not as severe as Andrew's but they're not getting worse.  So why am I getting better?  I do get a lot dirtier than I used to - it's hard to stay clean when you're mucking around in the garden.  I also own 2 very furry cats.  Both of these changes happened at the same time.  So there might be something behind the "cleanliness" theory behind allergies.

But I'm not totally fixed (no comments from the peanut gallery) - I think I'm developing seasonal (spring/fall) allergies.  Yuck.

re: hygenie hypothesis (none / 0) (#2)

I actually heard a really interesting talk on this at a conference in Philly 2 weeks ago. And like everyone else I thought about a personal example. My girlfriend Leanne has allergies, asthma and Crohns. She also has a sister who has none of the above. Her mother, like mine, was a clean freak. But her sister, like me, :-) is an animal freak and played with every dog in the neighbourhood as well as cats and anything she could get her hands on.
But the really cool part of the talk had to do with research on Crohns and the hygenie aspect that suggests that an absence of parasitic worms in what's responsible for the increase in cases. One guy has got great remission rates by infecting people with pig worm eggs in gatorade. Now if only my uni would let me do cool experiments like that. :-)
