... That Expo 86 opened. What do you remember most about the fair?

I remember...

  • Garbo's Garbage Pavillion
  • Using the Staff tram to get from one end to the other because it was free and nobody asked for ID
  • The aviation pavillion, where I helped build an entire airplane from kit to flying in the space of one week
  • The Egypt pavillion, with all the artifacts... I went back there about a dozen times
  • Buffalo burgers!
  • Pushing open the doors on the Skytrain (all the way open!) as it slowed down going past the fair, and waving at fairgoers

    And after Expo closed...

  • Climbing the fence and playing in the children's play area at night, and hiding from the security guards in the pit of plastic balls
  • Trying not to laugh as the security guards walked through the balls looking for those "damn kids", and almost losing it completely when one of my friends got caught when one of the guards tripped over him

    Fireworks (none / 0) (#1)
by sarah on Wed May 03, 2006 at 11:48:21 AM PST

... definitely the fireworks and laser show every night.   I had a seasons' pass and used to go down just to see them sometimes.

Maple walnut fudge.  My mother and I both had the PMS urge for it at the same time, and ended up eating a pound each at once.  The counter people were scared.

The Sri Lankan pavillion with all of the gemstones.  Pretty.  Definitely the Egypt pavillion with the artifacts.  The musical ride.  The skateboarder on the Highway to the Future.  Loaning towels to other people at UFO H2O on hot days.  The concerts, sitting outside and listening instead of buying a ticket.  Seeing Spirit of the West live for the first time.  Playing with the WVYB at the BC Pavillion.   On one of the busiest days of the fair suddenly running into someone I hadn't seen since grade seven.   The yellow queen in the Colour War film at the CP?CN? pavillion.  The Scream Machine.  Lineups.  Starting spontaneous lineups then walking off.

A really good summer actually.  Last one where I was only working part time instead of full time.  Those were the days...

for me, it was... (none / 0) (#2)

...the line up at the GM Spirit Pavillion, trying to block the handlers' signals to Expo Ernie, or at least block their line of sight so they couldn't see he was about to run into a garbage can.  My "duck" T-shirt that said "whirrled duxposition 1986".  Collecting passport stamps from the different pavillions, playing in the arcade, "but the lovliest of all was the unicorn".
