Tour Scandal and Floyd
By Tony
from the Tony department, Section News
Posted on Thu Nov 02, 2006 at 09:52:57 PM PST
A few of you may be interested in this.  There's a cycling forum at wwww.dailypeloton.com - click on "new DP forums" and you can navigate yourself from there.  Basically, there's been much discussion about Floyd Landis and his positive drugtest; basically his testostrone/estrogen (T/E) ratio was out of the allowable bracket.  What's of note about this forum is that Floyd is participating; yes that FLOYD.  His username is, well, it's "floyd" not that cryptic, I know.

Of note, and I heard this on a podcast Gladys has downloaded for me and not the fourm is that Floyd's ride on stage 17 of the TdF was not remarkable under statistical analysis.  What I mean by that is that Floyd didn't make up any time on the peloton during the climbs; he gained his advantage during the descents.  Also, he was the only rider on that stage that had a team car next to him for the duration of his breakaway, and dumped an incredible amount of water over himself to keep his core temperature low during a day when temperatures were 38-42°C.

Floyd is not only defending himself against critics, but he's trying to mount what his team calls the "Wikipedia defense" - they're looking for participation from the forum members (many of whom have the professional credentials to follow critically the procedures and protocols of a drug test) in mounting a defense.

I'm posting this because problems of this sort are more common that one might think, and often go undiagnosed for a long time, as they did in my case.  So if anyone else is chronically stuffed up and has a lot of PND or other respiratory problems (and especially if headaches and fatigue are correlated with the respiratory problems), get a CT done by a serious ENT specialist.

Political spectrum test in US terminology
By Wesley

This test by the Pew Research Center classifies respondents into 10 different groups that have been determined by factor analysis.  It's pretty cool.  It is expressed in US terminology, but it's widely applicable.  I have little doubt where all the Layton supporting people here from the previous survey will wind up, but I'd be interested, particularly if I'm wrong.

Another landmark up in smoke

There was a three alarm fire at the NE corner of Robson and Denman this morning.  And one of the casualties is the Sunset Book Exchange.  Granted it wasn't that great of a bookstore, but it was one of the few remaining non yuppiefied stores on Robson.  And after being there for over thirty years, it was a landmark.  But now it looks completely gutted, and I doubt it will come back.  Someone will probably build another Starbucks on the site, since it is a whole block down Robson to the next closest one....

By sarah

There is a new display on at Science World, the Geee! in Genome.  Celebrates fifty years since the structure of DNA was deduced by Watson, Crick (and Rosalyn Franklin!).  Also pays tribute to Michael Smill, which is nice.  It got a nice little article in the Sun, back of the B section.  BUT...both in a quote from Gordo Campbell (who hopefully was just screwing up a set speech or was misquoted) and in the article it refers to "geoscience".

??????

Geoscience is rocks, fer crying out loud.  If you are going to write an article on GENOMICS you should at least get the basic vocabulary right!

...but he said it right. It must be online somewhere, not that I have any clue how to post working links. I'm talking about Chretiens' quote about what he was thinking in terms of how the world had changed. I'll type in the last bit:

"You know, you cannot exercise your powers to the point of humiliation for the others. And that is what the western world, not only the Americans, the western world has to realize, because they are human beings too, and there are long-term consequences if you don't look hard at the reality in 10 or 20 or 30 years from now. And I do think that the western world is going to be too rich in realtion to the poor world. And necessarily, you know, we're looked upon as being arrogant, self-satisfying, greedy and with no limits. And the 11th of September is an occasion for me to realize that it's even more."
